From photo to string art: behind the Faded Art website

Faded Art turns a photo into a picture made of thread. I help Tobi with the website. The key question: how can visitors understand the product before uploading their own photo?

What happens in a string-art picture

Software calculates connections between fixed points. Overlapping threads form darker areas. From a distance, contours and shadows become visible and form the picture.

Fine details and busy backgrounds cannot simply be reproduced as a photograph. The preview shows how the original changes when rendered in thread.

Why a preview matters more than a long technical explanation

A familiar image, such as a dog, makes the idea tangible. Visitors can then check the crop and format of their own picture. The interface should follow this sequence.

A calculated preview is not a photograph of a finished piece. I label the difference to avoid misleading expectations.

My contribution: connecting product, design and usability

I work on the website’s design, structure and technical development. The string art calculation is part of the shared project. It is not an invention I developed alone.

On a phone, one step at a time helps: choose a photo, check the crop, view the preview. On a laptop, settings and preview can sit side by side.

How we would recognise an improvement

I would track how many visitors start customising, generate a preview and then order. Errors and abandoned attempts belong in the evaluation too. We are not publishing measured improvements here yet.

The idea applies elsewhere: show people early what they can expect. String art benefits from a preview. A workshop might explain a repair.
